Herbivore exclusion and active planting stimulate reed marsh development on a newly constructed archipelago

چکیده

Wetlands provide vital services on which human societies depend. As they have been rapidly degrading due to anthropogenic impacts worldwide, wetland restoration is increasingly applied. When a return the original state of constrained, forward-looking can new way enhance an ecosystem's ecological integrity. However, direction in ecosystems will develop strongly coupled initial environmental conditions and may benefit from active decisions (future) management. To improve natural values freshwater lake Netherlands, project was initiated Markermeer 2016, involving construction 700-ha archipelago called “Marker Wadden”. This should habitat higher trophic levels lake's food web through development currently missing Common reed (Phragmites australis) dominated marshlands with gradual land-water transitions. faces strong grazing pressure by Greylag geese (Anser anser) that possibly inhibit establishment. Here, we aimed unravel effect herbivory (using exclosures) introduction rhizomes early vegetation carbon dynamics bare soils this ecosystem manipulative field experiment. Our results showed excluding herbivores increased reed-vegetation cover, density maximum height, but only when were actively introduced. Spontaneous limited, colonization Broadleaf cattail (Typha latifolia) over reed. Net exchange respiration linked development, highest methane emissions most densely vegetated plots. We conclude establishment marshes reed, otherwise other types establish more slowly newly created wetlands. illustrates how management has potential novel ecosystems.

Comparison of aerated marsh-pond-marsh and continuous marsh constructed wetlands for treating swine wastewater.

Increased swine production in North Carolina has resulted in greater waste generation and is demanding some emerging new innovative technologies to effectively treat swine wastewater. One of the cost-effective and passive methods to treat swine wastewater is using constructed wetlands. The objective of this study was to evaluate the N removal under two N loads in 3 different wetland systems: ae...

Denitrification in Marsh-Pond-Marsh Constructed Wetlands Treating Swine Wastewater at Different Loading Rates

Denitrification in constructed wetlands can be very important in the treatment of swine lagoon effluent when land application areas are limited. The objectives of this investigation were to determine (i) the denitrification enzymeactivity (DEA) in themarsh sediments ofmarshpond-marsh (MPM) constructed wetlands, (ii) changes in DEA with additions of carbon and nitrate, and (iii) the response of ...

Herbivore Impacts on Marsh Production Depend upon a Compensatory Continuum Mediated by Salinity Stress

Plant communities are disturbed by several stressors and they are expected to be further impacted by increasing anthropogenic stress. The consequences of these stressors will depend, in part, upon the ability of plants to compensate for herbivory. Previous studies found that herbivore impacts on plants can vary from negative to positive because of environmental control of plant compensatory res...

Oxygen transfer in marsh-pond-marsh constructed wetlands treating swine wastewater.

Oxygen transfer efficiencies of various components of the marsh-pond-marsh (M-P-M) and marsh-floating bed-marsh (M-FB-M) wetlands treating swine wastewater were determined by performing oxygen mass balance around the wetlands. Biological oxygen demand (BOD) and total nitrogen (TN) loading and escaping rates from each wetland were used to calculate carbonaceous and nitrogenous oxygen demands. Am...

the effect of lexical and grammatical collocation instruction through input flooding versus awareness raising on short-term and delayed retention as well a active use

this study attempted to explore if teaching english collocations through two different modes of awareness-raising and input flooding has any possible differential effect on immediate retention as well as retention in a delayed assessment. it also compared the possible differential effect of teaching english collocations implicitly and explicitly on actively using the items in writing. m...
